Product Thinking: Running the Extra Mile – We talk a lot about the importance of ‘product thinking,’ but for a trained product manager, isn’t this just thinking? As product managers, we have honed our ability to change our mindset, don different perspectives, and see through various lenses and this skill is pivotal in effectively collaborating and influencing across an organization. But this product thinking mindset is where we dwell naturally, and it isn’t confined to our professional lives; it extends into our personal pursuits.

An example, running is a passion of mine, and as I lace up my running shoes, I can’t help but notice how product thinking principles show in the approach I take with my daily miles.

Data-Driven Decision Making

  • Product: We apply usage data and user metrics to make informed decisions about product improvements and features.
  • Running: I monitor aspects of my running performance using wearable tech and adjust my training based on the data.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Product: We collaborate with engineers, designers, marketers, and other teams to ensure a holistic approach to product development.
  • Running: I participate in in-person and online running clubs to learn from others and benefit from diverse perspectives.

Customer-Centric

  • Product: We conduct user research, examine usage, and analyze feedback to identify pain points, needs and preferences.
  • Running: I analyze my body’s signals (endorphins, fatigue, pain) during a run and adjust my strategy to maximize my enjoyment and performance.

Problem-Solving

  • Product: We identify market gaps and challenges, and strategize how the product can solve these problems.
  • Running: I identify obstacles like pedestrians, traffic, or road closures and adapt to address them.

MVP

  • Product: We launch early versions of the product to gather user feedback to iterate on it for continuous improvement.
  • Running: I participated first in short races and events so that I could learn and improve iteratively before attempting a marathon.

Agile Methodology

  • Product: We embrace iterative development, allowing for flexibility and adaptability in responding to changing needs and market conditions.
  • Running: I adjust my running schedule weekly to accommodate changes in my life and fitness level and stay on track with my goals.
