Empowering Students with Intellectual Disabilities
Today, as we celebrate #IPSEDay, or Inclusive Postsecondary Education Day, I want to talk about the opportunities available for students with intellectual disabilities in higher education. While often overlooked, these students have immense potential and deserve the chance to pursue their dreams and thrive in a college setting.
By the Numbers π
Over the past two decades, we have seen a remarkable shift in the availability of college programs for students with intellectual disabilities. From just a handful of options 20 years ago, there are now over 325 programs serving more than 8,000 students across the United States. This can largely be attributed to increased awareness, legislative changes, and the success of pioneering programs at universities like Lesley (Threshold program est. 1982), Edgewood College (Options program est. 2007), and College of Charleston SC (Reach program est. 2008)
Untapped Potential π
There is still a lot of work to do. Of the approximately 420,000 school-age students with intellectual disabilities, only 2% are likely to attend college. And out of the roughly 5,300 colleges and universities in the U.S., only 6% offer programs tailored to these students’ needs. It’s time to recognize the untapped potential and valuable contributions these students bring to the table.
The Power of Inclusive Education π€
Did you know that students with intellectual disabilities continue to learn and grow after high school, just like their peers and siblings. By attending college programs, they are more likely to secure competitive jobs upon graduation (RSA 911 data; Sannicandro et al., 2018), setting them up for long-term success and independence. And their presence on campus has a consistently unifying effect, fostering a culture of inclusivity, appreciation for diversity, and enhanced learning outcomes for all students.
A Personal Perspective π
As a parent of a neurodiverse student and an EdTech professional, I am filled with gratitude for the progress we have made and humbled by the work that still lies ahead in ensuring equitable access and opportunities for all learners.
A Call to Inspiration π£
