Courage and Influence in Product Management:  No matter what the mission is as product managers, it’s our job to go first, to motivate the organization and clarify the path forward.   We need to ensure that the broader organization’s constrained resources are utilized in the most effective way possible, and that our specialists are celebrated for their unique expertise and contributions.

There will be times you’re your ideas won’t take flight as expected, maybe causing you to feel like you are wasting your time. There will be instances where your early attempts seem foolish or brash to the onlooker. And yes, on occasion, you’ll inadvertently step on others’ toes in your quest for progress. However, amidst these risks, there are moments of triumph, especially when we can finally illuminate the path forward for our business and customers and rally the broader organization to that collective cause.

So have courage.  Courage in product management isn’t about just taking risks, it’s about embracing empathy, humility, and enthusiasm in every decision and interaction. It’s about putting yourself in the shoes of your team, colleagues, and users and working to understand the impact of your decisions. Your role demands efficiency and effectiveness, urging you to ‘fail fast’ but learn faster, ensuring that every setback is a setup for a greater comeback.

This is the essence of influence in product management.
